Bacteriostatic Water for Injection (often abbreviated as BWFI or "bac water") is a sterile, non-pyrogenic solution of water specifically formulated for parenteral use. It consists of sterile (distilled or purified) water with 0.9% benzyl alcohol (9 mg/mL) added as a bacteriostatic preservative. The benzyl alcohol inhibits the growth and multiplication of most bacteria, allowing the solution to remain safe for repeated withdrawals from a multi-dose vial over time (typically up to 28 days after first use, per manufacturer guidelines).

Bacteriostatic water is not for direct injection as a standalone substance—it is a diluent only. It should never be used for neonates/infants (due to benzyl alcohol toxicity concerns) or in large volumes where the preservative could accumulate.

In peptide and research contexts, it is the standard choice for reconstitution due to its balance of sterility, preservation, and usability—ensuring accurate dosing and extended shelf life of prepared solutions when stored properly (e.g., refrigerated at 2–8°C).
